History

The Sweden Democrats were founded in 1988 out of a nationalist movement and long stood far outside established political life. During the 2000s the party worked to distance itself from its early origins, including through expulsions and a zero-tolerance policy on extremism.

Under Jimmie Åkesson's leadership from 2005 the party grew steadily: local seats, the European Parliament in 2014, and the Riksdag from 2010, when it passed the four per cent threshold for the first time.

After the 2022 election it became the second largest party and a partner to the Kristersson government through the Tidö Agreement, without ministers of its own. The 2026 election was the party's first decline in a general election.

Energy
New nuclear power and lower energy taxes; opposition to expanded wind power.
Culture
Emphasis on Swedish cultural heritage, language and cohesion.
