History

The Social Democrats were founded in 1889 as the political arm of the labour movement, working closely with the trade unions. The party pushed through universal suffrage together with the liberals and entered government in 1932.

In the decades that followed the Swedish welfare state was built: universal pensions, child benefit, health insurance and an expanded public school and health system. The party has held the prime minister's office for most of the twentieth century.

Since the 1990s it has governed alternately alone in minority and in coalition, most recently with the Green Party in 2014-2021 and as a single-party minority government in 2021-2022. After the 2026 election it is again the largest party.
