History

The Green Party was founded in 1981 in the wake of the 1980 nuclear power referendum and was one of the first green parties in Europe. It entered the Riksdag in 1988, lost its seats in 1991 and returned in 1994.

The party has always had two spokespersons, one woman and one man, instead of a single leader - an arrangement reflecting the green movement's idea of shared leadership.

The Greens supported Social Democratic governments during the 1990s and 2000s and served in government with the Social Democrats in 2014-2021, the party's first time in office.

Expanded rail and public transport before new motorway capacity.
Energy
Investment in wind, solar and energy efficiency; critical of state-funded new nuclear power.

Shorter working hours in the long run and stronger mental health support for young people.
Migration
Humane right of asylum and criticism of temporary residence permits as the default.
