History

The Moderates were founded in 1904 as the General Electoral League, the parliamentary party of the right. The name Moderate Party was adopted in 1969.

Carl Bildt led the party to the prime minister's office in 1991-1994, a period of extensive deregulation and the application to join the EU. Fredrik Reinfeldt reshaped the party as the New Moderates and was prime minister in 2006-2014.

Ulf Kristersson became prime minister in 2022 in a government with the Christian Democrats and the Liberals, supported by the Sweden Democrats under the Tidö Agreement. After the 2026 election he leads a caretaker government while a new one is negotiated.
