History

The Liberals were founded in 1934 as the People's Party, with roots in the liberal, temperance and free-church movements. It was an early advocate of universal suffrage and education for all.

The party has been part of several centre-right governments, including 1976-1982, 1991-1994, 2006-2014 and again since 2022. Schools have been its clearest profile issue in the 2000s.

It was renamed the Liberals in 2015. In recent years it has polled close to the four per cent threshold, and changed leader in 2025 when Simona Mohamsson took over.
