History

The Christian Democrats were founded in 1964 as the Christian Democratic Coalition, with roots in the free-church movement and a wish to give Christian values a place in politics.

The party stayed outside the Riksdag for a long time and first entered in 1991, after almost three decades. Alf Svensson led it for more than 30 years.

It has been part of centre-right governments in 1991-1994, 2006-2014 and again since 2022. Elderly care, family policy and health care have been its clearest issues.

Policies

Summarised from the party's own programme - description, not endorsement.

Elderly care
State responsibility for the quality of elderly care and more places in residential care.
Health care
Nationalising hospital care to cut waiting times and even out differences between regions.
Family
Greater freedom of choice in childcare and support for families to organise their own lives.
Economy
Lower taxes for pensioners and low-income households.
Energy
New nuclear power with state guarantees, and criticism of expanded onshore wind.
Law and order
Tougher sentences and early intervention for young people drawn into crime.
