History

The party was founded in 1913 as the Farmers' League to represent agricultural interests. It took part in coalition governments with the Social Democrats in the 1930s and 1950s and was renamed the Centre Party in 1957.

In the 1970s it became the largest party on the centre-right, with Thorbjörn Fälldin as prime minister in 1976-1978 and 1979-1982, largely on opposition to nuclear power.

Since the 2000s it has moved in a green-liberal direction, with enterprise, decentralisation and rural conditions as core issues. During the 2022-2026 term the party changed leader several times before Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist took over in 2025.

Policies

Summarised from the party's own programme - description, not endorsement.

Rural policy
The whole country should work: services, roads and broadband outside the cities too.
Enterprise
Simpler rules and lower costs for small businesses, which create most new jobs.
Environment
Green transition through market tools: priced emissions and renewable energy across the country.
Decentralisation
Decisions as close to people as possible and stronger local self-government.
Agriculture
Increased Swedish food production and crisis preparedness.
Integration
A focus on work and language as the route into society, with lower barriers to a first job.
